About Us

Huon Valley Theatre Inc. formed in 1988, and membership has grown steadily over the years. Now between forty and fifty people could be involved with the company at any one time. HVT has gained recognition and reputation with each production it presents. People look for HVT shows and are keen to take part.

Huon Valley Theatre is based at the Huonville Town Hall and performs its magic with very limited resources. The Company is self-supporting, relying on community support of its activities for funding and talent. It is an amateur company with high standards and a professional outlook. Because HVT encourages community involvement and uses local talent in its productions, a wide section of people have become involved, especially the youth.

Drew Bennett, a former HVT member, saw the value of establishing an offshoot group for the younger members, The Huon Valley Apprentice Theatre. The idea was to give them an opportunity to learn the skills of theatre. This group grew and staged full-scale productions of its own.

Huon Valley Theatre endeavours to stage two productions a year. The major production is usually a popular musical. Often with large casts, these musicals are a great opportunity for many to try out or refine their stagecraft. The other production is likely to be a comedy or drama, and gives directors a chance to stage more challenging material. Other activities of HVT include presenting variety nights, and more recently, its “Huon Idyll” talent show.
